Extradition essentially a legal matter: Jaiswal

Times24.net: India has reiterated that extradition cases involving individuals sought by Bangladesh are essentially legal matters and must be handled through the applicable legal process. Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during the ministry’s bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday (October 7). Responding to a question on extradition involving Bangladesh, Jaiswal said extradition was essentially a legal matter involving various legal considerations.
He said India had previously stated its position on the issue and that such matters were handled in accordance with the relevant legal and judicial processes. Asked about relations with Bangladesh, Jaiswal said India wanted to build a constructive, positive and forward-looking relationship with its neighbour.
He said this approach continued to guide India’s engagement with Bangladesh. Discussions have also been underway over a possible visit to India by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said on September 30 that Tarique Rahman’s visit to India would take place, although no date had yet been fixed.

He said the two sides should be given sufficient time to make the necessary preparations for the visit.

A number of unresolved issues remain between Bangladesh and India, including Bangladesh’s request for the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, water sharing and trade.

Speaking on October 3, Trivedi said outstanding issues between the two neighbours should be addressed through regular dialogue, mutual respect and trust.

In response to Bangladesh’s request for Hasina’s extradition, Trivedi said the matter was going through a legal process and that no specific timeframe could be given.

Hasina has been staying in India since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024 following the fall of her government.
