A Statesmanlike Appeal for a Human-Centred World

Times24.net: As world leaders gather at United Nations Headquarters for the General Assembly,

Secretary-General António Guterres has called upon them to come together for peace, dignity, justice and humanity.

His message carries a profound significance for our time.

The international community continues to face conflict, division, economic coercion,
human-rights violations and growing distrust. Too often, military and economic power determines outcomes that should instead be guided by international law, human dignity and the equal worth of every human life.

The world must move beyond this paradigm.
Security cannot be sustained by military strength alone. Lasting security must also be built upon justice, human rights, dialogue, mutual respect, international cooperation and the protection of civilians.

Humanity therefore needs a transformation in its security culture—from a culture centred on deterrence and confrontation toward one centred on human security, cooperation and shared responsibility.

This does not mean ignoring legitimate security concerns. It means recognizing that no nation can achieve lasting security in a world where insecurity, poverty, injustice, conflict and human suffering remain widespread.

The challenge before the international community is therefore not simply how to manage conflict, but how to build the conditions in which conflict becomes less likely and peace becomes more sustainable.
Let us replace the logic of domination with the principles of cooperation.

Let us place human dignity at the heart of security.

Let us make dialogue stronger than confrontation and humanity stronger than fear.
The future of our planet should not be determined by the power to wage war, but by our shared capacity to preserve peace.
A safer world will ultimately depend not only on stronger institutions, but on a stronger culture of humanity.
